KEEPING YOUR CAT’S TEETH CLEAN AND HEALTHY CAN BE AS EASY AS CHEW, CHEW, CHEW

January 25, 2012

FORT WORTH, Texas — Goodbye difficult. Goodbye excuses. New C.E.T.®   HEXTRA® Premium Chews for Cats from Virbac Animal Health are turning a tough task into a real treat, and making it easy for cat owners to clean and protect their cat’s teeth every single day.

This is especially good news in light of research studies that show a whopping 68 percent of cats over the age of 3 years have some form of periodontal disease1.  Even in early stages, periodontal disease can result in persistent pain, inflammation and bone loss. If left untreated, periodontal disease can progress and lead to serious health risks associated with diabetes, compromised liver function, renal disease, and even heart failure2. ,3

Even though cleaning their cat’s teeth at home can help prevent plaque and tartar build-up, and reduce the risk of disease, many cat owners say it’s just too difficult, even impossible. However, within just three weeks of a professional cleaning, if no home dental care is provided, plaque can already be seen forming on the teeth.

“Many pet owners don’t realize that maintaining their pet’s oral health is as important as preventing heartworm disease,” said Heidi Lobprise, DVM, DAVDS, Virbac Animal Health. “While at-home brushing is the best way to keep a cat’s mouth clean, many cats resist to such a degree their owner gives up. HEXTRA Chews are a great way to help protect a cat’s teeth and overall health until the next professional cleaning.”

New C.E.T. HEXTRA Chews are fish flavored and kibble sized to entice even the most finicky cats, and can simply be provided as a treat up to five times a day or mixed into food. They are also clinically proven to improve a cat’s dental health. Formulated with an exclusive solution of chlorhexidine, C.E.T. HEXTRA Premium Chews for Cats:

  • Help remove plaque and tartar with antiseptic action for up to 24 hours4
  • Inhibit the growth of bacteria4
  • Help to keep a cat’s mouth clean and healthy between in-clinic cleanings

Professional cleanings are important, too, according to specialists at the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC). “Prevention of the most common oral disease in pets (and in people) consists of frequent removal of the dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth that are not kept clean.” That’s why the AVDC encourages pet owners to follow their veterinarian’s recommendations for in-clinic periodontal cleanings, particularly after the age of 3, along with suggestions for routine home dental care.

A complete line of easy-to-use C.E.T. Home Dental Care products is available through veterinarians, including enzymatic toothpastes, toothbrushes, a drinking water additive, oral rinse and a variety of oral hygiene chews.
